Narrative:
A Piper PA-31-350 Navajo Chieftain (a Colemill Panther conversion) was destroyed by high speed vertical impact and post-impact fire shortly after takeoff from Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport (MFR/KMFR), Medford, Oregon.
The sole occupant onboard the twin-engine airplane received fatal injuries.
A video of the accident aircraft’s final moments indicates that the airplane had experienced a VMC rollover. V=airspeed, MC=minimum controllable, rollover=the wing of the operating engine at takeoff power literally flies over the wing of the dead engine which is producing a great amount of drag.
This rollover occurs with the rapidity of a snap roll as seen in aerobatic performances and requires substantial altitude for recovery. VMC is marked on the aircraft’s Airspeed Indicator with a blue line.
