Italian who missed AF 447 flight dies in car crash

An Italian woman who arrived to the airport late for the fatal Air France flight 447 has died in a car accident, according to ANSA news agency.
Johanna Ganthaler, a pensioner from the Bolzano-Bozen Province (South Tyrol, Italy) and her husband, Kirk, were on vacation in Brazil and missed flight 447 after arriving to the airport late. They were able to board a later flight and avoided being victims of the horrible crash.
The couple rented a car in Munich, Germany and decided to drive home to Italy. On their way home, while driving through Kufstein, Austria, their car ended up in the opposite lane and they had a head on collision with a truck.
The woman died at the hospital that she was taken to. Her husband is still in critical condition.
That is such a sad story. You escape death in one tragic accident only to die in another a few days later.

A330 Pitot Tube Upgrade Remains In AF447 Spotlight
AWIN First Jun 11 , 2009
PARIS
In the wake of the crash of Air France Flight 447, attention continues to focus on a possible failure of pitot tubes on the A330-200. But the European Aviation Safety Agency also is reminding operators to focus on proper procedures when it comes to air speed.
Air France says it had received the first of a new design of pitot tubes for Airbus A330s and A340s on May 29 -- AF447 crashed during an overnight flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris that took off on May 31. The airline launched the pitot tube improvement program on April 27.
Initially, the plan was just to introduce the upgrade as pitot tubes failed, but that plan has since been stepped up. Air France CEO Pierre-Henri Gourgeon says the first of the improved Thales pitot tubes had only just arrived and been fitted on one or two aircraft. The airline had 16 A330s and 19 A340s in operation at the end of May.
Gourgeon insists there’s been no indication a pitot tube problem caused AF447 to crash.
Meanwhile, EASA has issued a safety bulletin to remind operators to ensure flight crew know how to detect and identify unreliable air speed indications and to take measures to continue safe flying. EASA notes that “familiarization of flight crews with unreliable airspeed indication procedures should be provided through adequate training. Flight crew knowledge and proficiency should be checked regularly.”
EASA notes it is issuing the bulletin in response to the crash of AF447, without implying discrepancies in reported air speed were at fault. It notes that “the root cause of this may be due to, but is not limited to, inappropriate maintenance, contamination by small objects or materials on the ground or in the air, extreme environmental conditions producing icing outside the certification envelop of the probes, or a large amount of water ingestion.”
Airbus says that the new Thales pitot tube standard “has been developed to enhance water drainage encountered during heavy rain conditions on take-off or landing phases.” But the aircraft maker insists that the old design can continue to be operated and that even the new device isn’t entirely immune to icing either.
Goodrich is the other provider of A330/A340 pitot tubes.
A central issue remains, though, that no direct link between the speed sensing anomaly and crash has, yet, been found. And information gleaned from other elements of the 24 Acars messages or other clues that have not-yet been gathered could still draw investigators down an entirely different line of inquiry.

Bien dicen: "Cuando te toca, aunque te quites..."
Saludos.
