Twenty people suffered injuries when a Boeing 737 operated by Merpati Nusantara Airlines overran a runway in heavy rain at Manokawi Airport in Indonesia’s Papua Province.

The aircraft’s body was split open in the crash, the Associated Press says, quoting local officials. The injuries were mostly bruises with some broken bones.

The aircraft was carrying 103 passengers and six crew members.

Since 1971 Merpati has suffered 36 serious safety incidents in which 297 people have died, according to the Aviation Safety Network. Among its more recent fatal accidents, was a crash in August 2009 that resulted in 15 fatalities, one in 2001 in which three died, two in 1997 that killed 18 and one in 1995 that resulted in 14 deaths.

The airline has had 21 fatal accidents in 39 years, at an average of one every 22 months.

Along with other Indonesian airlines, it has been blacklisted by the European Union since 2007, although some, including Garuda Indonesia, were taken off the list in July 2009. Indonesia has suffered 12 crashes in the past two years, seven of them with fatalities.

Que mal por el avion y los heridos, una aerolinea así aqui en Mexico ya tuviera problemas con tantos incidentes, que bien que no hubo perdidas humanas.
