Drunken radio threats to pilots land Australian teen in trouble
PERTH, Australia (AFP) — An Australian teenager faces prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to making a series of threatening and bizarre radio broadcasts to pilots and air traffic controllers in Perth.
A Perth court heard that Scott Pike, 19, was under the influence of alcohol and cannabis when he used a VHF radio transceiver to harangue pilots and the Perth Airport control tower with threats, alarming reports of aircraft on fire and an occasional nursery rhyme.
In one message, Pike said, "I am going to bring back explosives and blow up all of you bastards", while in another he told the pilots of a plane to bail out because they were on fire, the court heard.
The youth also broadcast requests to enter controlled airspace, to cross active runways and to receive clearance to land.
Pike admitted making the radio transmissions for two days in March, but said he did not think anyone could hear him.
He only realised his broadcasts were being heard after pilots complained and the incidents were reported in the local news, prosecutor Alisdair Putt said.
Pike was bailed to appear for sentencing next month and faces up to two years in prison and fines of more than $13,000 ($9,600 US) on charges of endangering air safety.
A report into Pike's psychological state was requested by his lawyer.
