An easyJet flight had to make an emergency landing at Newcastle Airport after the cockpit filled with smoke, an investigation has revealed.

Pilots were forced to wear oxygen masks and issue a mayday alert when the commercial airliner got into serious trouble just 11 minutes into the flight.

There were 172 passengers on board when the frightening incident occurred on flight EZY6931 from Edinburgh to Hamburg, Germany, on November 28 last year.

According to an Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) report, 10 similar faults with the Airbus A320 model had been reported that year and key warnings were ignored.

easyJet said it was unaware of the problem, even though the information had been sent to the firm by the plane’s manufacturer.

However, the review found it had been issued as “information” rather than “instructions” so hadn’t been routinely reviewed by easyJet - and another “large UK operator” revealed it also didn’t study the messages either.

It’s not the only time an easyJet flight has had a nervy moment landing at Newcastle.

In July, a flight carrying passengers from the Portuguese resort of Faro had to abort a landing as it attempted to touch down in the North East.

One passenger told ChronicleLive the plane was within 10-20ft of the ground when the pilot decided to pull the nose of the plane back up an try the landing again.
