Boeing and Saudi Arabian Airlines announced an order Monday for 12 Boeing 777-300ERs with options to buy 10 more in a deal valued at $3.3 billion at average list prices. The order was previously attributed to an unidentified customer on Boeing’s orders and deliveries website.

Saudi and Boeing also announced the carrier is taking over orders for eight 787s previously placed by Kuwait-based leasing company ALAFCO.

Saudi Airlines DG Khaled al-Mulhim said, “Our decision to order the 777-300ER is part of a long-term growth strategy to expand and modernize our fleet with newer, more fuel-efficient airplanes.”

According to Saudi’s website, its fleet totals 122 aircraft, comprising four 747-400s, nine 747-300s, 22 777-268s, 29 MD-90s, 35 Airbus A320s, eight A330s and 15 Embraer 170s. It states the carrier will introduce 15 A321s “in the end of 2010” and 12 777-300s “in the end of 2011.”
