A small aircraft and a helicopter collided in midair over the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan on Saturday, raining debris down into the waterway, the authorities said.
It was not immediately clear how many people were on board the aircraft, but a Fire Department official said it appeared that at least one person had been, “removed from the water,” and taken ashore.
“It was in the vicinity of West 14th Street,” said Paul J. Browne, a the Police Department’s chief spokesman said.
Officials said it did not initially appear that either the plane or the helicopter belonged to a government agency.
The first reports of the crash came over emergency radios shortly before noon.
Responders were rushing, by land, to the western edge of Lower Manhattan, and launching a water-based response, a Fire Department official said.
In January the Hudson River was the scene of an emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 which slid into the Hudson River on a weekday afternoon after the crew reported that the plane had struck a flock of birds shortly after leaving La Guardia Airport.
All 155 people aboard the commercial flight survived as vessels from the New York Police and Fire Departments and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey worked with New York Waterway ferries to send boats, along with the Coast Guard, to the icy waters

NEW YORK - A helicopter carrying six people has collided with a small plane over the Hudson River.
Police say both aircrafts are underwater.
At least one person has been rescued.
It's unclear how many people were aboard the small plane.
The helicopter is operated by Liberty Tours.
The mid-air collision happened at around 11 a.m.
MyFoxNY.com Producer Kathy Carvajal witnessed the crash:
"I was looking over the river from my apartment building in Union City (New Jersey) when I saw what looked like two small planes- one possibly carrying a banner trailing behind- crash into another small plane. "
Both planes came apart. I saw one spiral into the water. From my vantage point, I couldn't see where the other planed landed."
"Ambulances raced to the Hoboken/Jersey City area near the Hudson River waterfront within minutes," says MyFoxNY.com Producer Kathy Carvajal.
There are unconfirmed reports of one person seriously injured.

Segun testigos el avion embistio por atras a el helicoptero, igual por venir babeando y esos aviones tienen muy mala visibilidad hacia abajo, y especialmente hacia abajo y enfrente, es factible.

Qué lástima, yo volé en esa misma máquina por allá de fines de 2003.
Cuando vi las noticias del accidente, recordé la gran altura a la cual sobrevuelan los helos de esa compañía, en su ir y venir con turistas desde la zona de muelles cerca del museo Intrepid hasta la Estátua de la libertad, así que los turistas y el piloto no tenían posibilidades de sobrevivir a una caída tan grande sobre el Hudson.
¿Saben si hay ya alguna hipótesis de por que impactó el Piper al AS350?

Controller And Supervisor Likely To Be Fired
Investigations by NTSB and FAA show that the Teterboro Airport Air Traffic Controller was on the phone with his girlfriend at the time of Saturday's mid-air collision over the Hudson River. Both he and his supervisor, who was unable to be located at the time of the accident, have been suspended. FAA officials say they will likely be fired.
Both people, who have not been identified, seriously deviated from their assignments, according to investigators. While it is not believed that the controllers phone conversation had any bearing on the accident, FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt said the controllers actions were "unacceptable", according to the New York Daily News.
Audio recordings from the tower revealed the phone conversation. "In conjunction with the FAA's participation with the NTSB's inquiry into the recent Hudson River accident, we learned that the controller handling the Piper flight was involved in apparently inappropriate conversations on the telephone at the time of the accident," FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt said. "We also learned that the supervisor was not present in the building as required. We respect the NTSB's authority in determining the cause of the accident and will continue to work closely with NTSB investigators," Babbitt added.
The preliminary investigation also indicates the controller gave the pilot of the fixed-wing aircraft the proper frequency for contacting Newark International Airport, and followed the correct hand-off procedure. The pilot never contacted Newark.
ANN Realtime Update August 14 0820: NATCA released the following statement in response to the Federal Aviation Administration's announcement regarding investigations into the Aug. 8 Hudson River mid-air collision.
"We support that any such allegation is fully investigated before there is a rush to judgment about the behavior of any controller."

Una llamada telefónica personal y la ausencia de un supervisor durante la colisión aérea de la semana pasada sobre el río Hudson, en la ciudad de Nueva York, motivaron la suspensión de dos controladores, aunque las autoridades dicen que las acciones probablemente no contribuyeron al accidente.
La Administración Federal de Aviación (FAA) dijo en una declaración que un controlador en el aeropuerto de Teterboro, Nueva Jersey, y su supervisor fueron suspendidos luego que se determinase que el controlador ''al parecer (mantuvo) conversaciones inapropiadas'' al momento del choque entre una avioneta privada y un helicóptero turístico. Nueve personas murieron en el accidente.
La agencia dijo que aunque no había razón para pensar que las acciones de los empleados contribuyeron al accidente, esa conducta es inaceptable. El controlador había transferido el monitoreo de la avioneta a otro aeropuerto poco antes de la colisión.
